My Story: How Magnesium Found Me

I'll be honest with you, when perimenopause hit me, it hit hard. My moods were all over the place. One minute calm, the next completely on edge, and I couldn't work out why my own body felt so unfamiliar.

I went to my doctor, and she prescribed Magnesium tablets. Simple enough, I thought. Except these tablets were enormous. I have never been great with swallowing pills, and these ones felt impossible. After a few uncomfortable attempts, I gave up on them altogether.

But I couldn't shake the feeling that Magnesium was the missing piece. So I started researching on one of my very early morning wake-ups, and that's when I discovered topical Magnesium, absorbed straight through the skin instead of swallowed. I got curious, and being the hands on person I am, I made my own Magnesium Oil at home.

Low and behold, it worked. Almost instantly, I felt my erratic moods begin to settle. That calm I'd been chasing for months arrived within minutes of applying it. I was genuinely stunned by how quickly my body responded.

I was so moved by that first experience that I couldn't stop there. I went on to formulate my own Magnesium Butter, blending that same restorative Magnesium with nourishing botanicals. And the rest, as they say, is history. That kitchen experiment became Koa Botanics, born from one woman's search for relief, now here to support yours too.

These days, my favourite place to apply Magnesium Oil is on my abdomen and hips, right where I feel tension gather. And at night, I love massaging the Lavender Magnesium Butter into the soles of my feet, where uptake is particularly good, as part of my wind down ritual before bed.

Relieve Menopause with Magnesium

What Is Menopause, Really?

Menopause marks the natural end of a woman's menstrual cycles, usually somewhere between 45 and 55. It's officially reached after 12 months without a period, but the lead up, known as perimenopause, can begin years earlier as our hormones start to shift and settle into something new.

During this time, oestrogen and progesterone, the hormones that have quietly shaped so much of our monthly rhythm, begin to taper off. This ripples through far more than fertility. It can touch sleep, mood, skin, muscles, and the way our body manages heat and stress.

You might notice:

  • Hot flushes and night sweats
  • Restless or lighter sleep
  • Moods that feel erratic or harder to steady
  • Muscle tension, aches, and stiffness
  • Fatigue that lingers no matter how much you rest
  • Changes in your skin's texture and elasticity

Every woman's journey through this looks different. Some sail through with barely a ripple. Others feel it in every part of their day. Wherever you find yourself, please know this is a natural, transformative chapter. Not something to push through quietly on your own.

Why Magnesium Matters During This Season

Magnesium is one of the body's most essential minerals, quietly involved in hundreds of processes that keep us feeling steady and well. It supports muscle relaxation, calms the nervous system, and helps the body ease into rest. During menopause, when our hormones are already asking so much of us, Magnesium becomes an even more valuable companion for restoring a sense of calm.

Here's where it can offer real support:

Easing muscle tension. As hormone levels shift, many of us notice new aches, cramping, or tightness through the body. Magnesium is known for its role in muscle relaxation, soothing tension right where you feel it.

Easing joint discomfort. Menopause can bring more inflammation than we're used to, often settling right in the joints. Magnesium may help calm that inflammation, easing the everyday aches and stiffness that come with it.

Cooling hot flushes. A light spray of Magnesium across the tummy is quickly absorbed and can help calm the nervous system as a hot flush builds, easing the intensity and helping your body settle back into balance.

Supporting rest. Sleep is often one of the first things disrupted during perimenopause and menopause. Magnesium supports the nervous system in settling, easing the body into a more restful state as bedtime approaches.

Restoring a sense of calm. The emotional ebb and flow of this transition can feel just as real as the physical symptoms. Magnesium's calming influence on the nervous system can help take the edge off restlessness, and support that steady, grounded feeling day to day. It's certainly what I experienced.
