Magnesium - a gift of natural wellness from the sea

Kia ora, I’m Michelle, the founder of Koa Botanics. The inspiration behind our Magnesium Range came from my own experiences as a woman navigating different life stages.

When I was pregnant with my second child, I suffered badly from swollen feet and ankles. I often think: I wish I had created these products earlier! They would have been a lifesaver for me in those months of discomfort.

Later, in peri-menopause, I was taken by surprise at how suddenly anxiety arrived, along with a loss of confidence I had never known before. It was unsettling, and it made me realise just how deeply hormonal changes can affect our sense of self.

These moments cemented my passion for creating natural, effective solutions to support women through sleep struggles, stress, pregnancy, and menopause. Magnesium became my answer. Nature’s own mineral for balance and calm. Today, I’m honoured to share how Topical Magnesium can support you through every stage of life.

Sleep: Unwind and Drift Off Naturally

I know how frustrating it is to lie awake at night with your mind buzzing. Magnesium is nature’s sleep mineral. It calms the nervous system and helps the body relax into rest.

My favourite ritual is massaging our Lavender Magnesium Body Butter into the soles of my feet before bed. It’s silky, nourishing, and the lavender works in harmony with magnesium to signal to the body that it’s time to unwind. Customers tell me it’s their go-to natural sleep remedy a game-changer for restless nights.

Stress & Anxiety: Calm Your Nervous System

Life throws a lot at us. When stress builds, magnesium is one of the first minerals to be depleted. Applying it topically is such a simple, powerful way to bring your nervous system back into balance.

I recommend our Magnesium Oil Spray. A quick spritz across the chest or tummy when you’re feeling tense can help ground you and calm your mood. Many women also use it during moments of hormonal anxiety or when hot flushes flare up.

Pregnancy: Gentle Support for Body & Mind

During pregnancy, the body’s demand for magnesium skyrockets. I remember hearing from so many mums-to-be struggling with leg cramps, swollen feet, and sleepless nights. That’s why I always recommend our Unscented Magnesium Cream or Lavender Magnesium Cream for this special time.

Massage it into your lower legs, swollen feet, or even across your lower back. Women tell me it helps ease pregnancy cramps, restless legs, and supports more restful sleep. And because it’s topical, it bypasses the digestive system, meaning fast relief, exactly where you need it.

On a personal note, with my second child I suffered from swollen feet and ankles, and I so often think: I wish I had created these products earlier! They would have been a lifesaver for me in those months of discomfort. It’s one of the reasons I’m so passionate about sharing magnesium support with other mums today.

Menopause: Balance, Sleep & Relief from Hot Flushes

Menopause is one of the biggest transitions we go through as women, and it can leave you feeling out of balance. From hot flushes and night sweats to mood swings and disrupted sleep, magnesium can be an anchor.

I’ll be honest, during peri-menopause I was surprised by how suddenly anxiety crept in. Along with it came a real loss of confidence - something I had never experienced before. That was a turning point for me, and one of the reasons I became even more committed to creating natural ways to restore calm and balance.

I hear so many stories of women using our Magnesium Body Butter at night to calm restless legs and improve sleep, and reaching for the Magnesium Oil Spray during the day when hot flushes or anxiety strike. Magnesium helps regulate temperature, ease stress, and bring the body back into harmony.

One of our customers wrote: “No night sweats and slept right through the night… a big game-changer.” Those words stay with me because they remind me why I started this journey.

Your Stories Matter

Koa means Joy, and my end game is to help women find more of it in their day. My own experiences - swollen ankles in pregnancy, anxiety and loss of confidence in peri-menopause, and the sleepless nights that so many of us endure - are what inspired me to create this range. I didn’t want women to have to “just put up with it” when nature already holds the answers.

Whether you’re searching for a natural sleep remedy, looking to ease pregnancy cramps with magnesium, or finding support for menopause symptoms, I truly believe these products can bring calm, balance, and confidence back into your daily life.

If you’d like to try a variety, I recommend our Magnesium Butter Trio three botanically infused butters designed to help you create a ritual-filled, aromatic self-care routine right through your day.

I’d love to hear your story too. Have you tried topical magnesium for sleep, stress, pregnancy, or menopause? Share your experience with us, tag @koabotanics on Instagram. Together, we can break the cycle of exhaustion and imbalance, and bring more joy into our lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Topical Magnesium safe in pregnancy?
Yes, topical magnesium can be safely used during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters. I always recommend starting with a small patch test and choosing our Unscented Magesnium Butter or Lavender Magnesium Body Butter. It’s wonderful for easing pregnancy cramps, restless legs, and swollen feet. As always, check with your healthcare provider - particularly in the first trimester. 👉 Read more here.

How long does it take to notice results?
Many women feel relief within minutes - especially when applying fast absorbing Magnesium Oil to cramping muscles or restless legs. For sleep, consistency is key: massage our Lavender Magnesium Body Butter into your feet nightly, and within a week most people report deeper, more restful sleep.

Can I use magnesium every day?
Absolutely. In fact, daily use helps restore your body’s magnesium levels more effectively. I personally use magnesium twice a day - at night for sleep, and during the day when stress or hormonal symptoms appear.

Will topical magnesium sting or itch?
Sometimes, if your body is very low in magnesium, you might feel a light tingle when first applying the oil. This usually eases with regular use. If you prefer something gentler, start with our Magnesium Body Butters (Creams), which combine magnesium with nourishing butters and essential oils for a silky, soothing application.

What’s the difference between Magnesium Oil and Magnesium Butter?
